REFILLING HALON BOTTLES

It's a fairly long embarassing story, but I now have a spare brand new but empty 5lb Safety Systems fire bottle with a sticker on it that says it's rechargable. But when I call Safety Systems they tell me they cannot recharge it because its an aluminum container. ANY IDEAS?

Call James Standley at Competition Systems in Seattle. I'm not sure what they are currently doing but he had worked out refilling Lifeline systems locally and had a good relationship with the folks who actually handled the gas for him. I don't KNOW that this will help but James knows about this stuff.

Beyond the 'limited availability of Halon' issue, the bottle itself could be the problem. IIRC, there are new (new = less than 5 years old) DOT requirements for materials and designs for firebottles. If bottles don't meet the current requirements, the recharge/refill stations won't touch them.
 
There are actually other issues at play. Pressure vessels have to conform to particular specs (DOT, I think) to be shipped. It may be that they can be filled but not shipped and I understand from one source (one of the largest Halon recyclers in the world) that there is NO actual shortage of either 1211 or 1301. I'll only add that I searched long and hard to find a good Halon 1211 hand-held for the SS car and will use the same stuff in an onboard system when I upgrade it.

lol....I truly didn't mean it to be a plug.....but there are better and easier fire systems on the market....

I went through similar problems in the past ...until ...lol...(buttoning lip here)

Go to www.firebottleracing.com. They are the supplier to many pro teams and sell thru Summit as well. Last time I talked to them they could do a refill. I agree that the alternate AFFF may be a better choice for the long term. We are looking at both systems now to replace our Purple K handheld.
