Head studs legal?

I'm trying to build a motor for my car. I know hardware is open but can I use studs for the head instead of head bolts?

o. Hardware items (nuts, bolts, etc.) may be replaced with similar items performing the same fastening function(s).

Hate to be the nay sayer here but when did a stud become simliar to a bolt?

When both were deemed to be fasteners by the GCR Technical Glossary:

Fasteners – Any mechanism which serves no other purposes than to cause a component to maintain a fixed position (i.e. bolt, nut, screw, etc.).

Note the first two words of the definition. And just for good measure, the bolt and stud are also technically the same type of fastener - a helical inclined plane clamping device.
