OHHHHHhhhhhh....
take the carb apart, carefully, especially if you don't have spare gaskets, and clean all the passages out. The "sitting for a while" comment is key. Likely the old grunge is doing it's thing. Also, you don't say, but if you've removed the choke and emissions gear, you will have a tough time getting it to run without the accel pump. It will be very cold blooded! Once warm it will be fine, though!
Also, if you've dumped raw fuel down it's throat, and it hasn't run in a while, beware of the no oil no compression blues. It will crank really easily, but be difficult to start. The solution is a small dose of ATF fluid down the carb as the engine is cranking, but don't do this with the door closed, or if you have skittish neighbors! The smoke should clear any and all mosquitos for months, though!
